The EPC contract for the delivery of Hanhikivi 1 NPP was signed in December 2013 between Customer Fennovoima Oy, a Finnish company, and JSC Rusatom Overseas (since December 17, 2015 – REIN JSC).

The Hanhikivi 1 NPP construction project was being implemented “from scratch” in the municipality of Pyhäjoki in the northern part of Finland, on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea.

By the moment the EPC contract was unilaterally terminated by the Finnish side, substantial preparatory work had already been completed at the NPP site. At the same time, design documentation had been submitted to the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), Finland’s nuclear supervisory body, in the amount necessary for evaluation to be made on the possibility of granting a license for NPP construction.

All qualifications and experience accumulated during the work on the project under the requirements of Finland’s regulatory authority STUK and EU requirements in nuclear energy, are retained in REIN division in the interests of implementation and development of other projects in the industry.

The integrity of documents and materials developed for the Hanhikivi 1 project has been ensured. In the NPP site area, necessary work is being conducted to duly preserve the safety of project buildings and structures in accordance with Finnish requirements.
